Androcles
This week, we started Dr. Edwin’s class doing few revisions on fairy tales, most notably Androcles. The story is about a prisoner who escapes from prison, tumbling to an injured lion in the process, heal the lion and later, get caught by the guards. When they were put together in an arena so that the noble people can have a show, the lion didn’t attack him since he’s once helped the lion.
Basically, we discuss on the possible theme regarding the story and few people did come out with interesting ideas, though mine is not accepted. Anyway, it’s part of the learning process, nothing much you can do about it.
Later, we discuss a bit on stories of heroes and legends in the Malaysian context. If we associate it with the Malay’s culture, there’s a lot of heroic and legendary stories that came rushing in my head. There are a lot of them! Hang Tuah and his collegues, Mahsuri, Puteri Gunung Ledang, Puteri Santubong and a lot of other Puteri that hardly any space to list them all together.
As for the homework, Dr. Edwin’s ask us to do review on “Daedalus and Icarus” by Ovid. We need to draw issue that we can find in the story so that we discuss it in the next class.
