Daedalus and Icarus

This started with a lot of works to be submitted. It is rather sad that we didn’t have any class with Dr. Edwin today (Monday). On the last class, we did the story of “Daedalus and Icarus” in depth. Later, Dr. Edwin asks us to type down a shorter version of the story, and also, we need to list down all the moral values that we can found in the story. We also need to take out any major issue that we can find in it.

For me, I decide to pull out the issue of ‘freedom’ from the text. My reason for this because, when we read the story, we can find the issue been discussed, all over the place. From the very beginning when Minos decides to kill the monster, he had asked Daedalus to construct a maze so that the monster would be trapped and it will make it easier for him to kill it. The idea of cutting off the monster from its freedom had ultimately led to the monster’s death.

Later, Daedalus too, was trapped in the same issue when he no longer feels happy living in Crete and decides to run away to his homeland, again, searching for freedom. Knowing he cannot escape through the land or sea, he invented something that would allow him and his son, Icarus to fly. This invention however, though successful, had actually led to the death of Icarus.

Other than that, we did discuss about our ‘thesis statement’ just to make sure that we are on the right track. I had chosen “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, but I need to a re-adjustment on my thesis statement since it looks more like a topic. Hopefully I can get it done by this week.
